The days of the chalkboard are long behind us, and this transition has not come a moment too soon. The screech of chalk and the gagging of students forced to bang chalk erasers during detention have finally passed, but what have they been replaced with? We live in a world that seems to be overrun with technology, which is not really surprising considering the recent advancements, and finally, a suitable replacement for the chalkboard and the basic whiteboard has been found. It might not be cheap, but it is certainly effective.
An interactive whiteboard, like a regular whiteboard, allows both the teacher and the students to ‘mark’ on the surface, allowing the teacher to make notes, display word problems, etc. The difference however is that the whiteboard connects to a computer, and with that being the case, anything marked on the board can be saved and recalled for later use. In addition to that, the contents of the computer can be displayed as well, causing the whiteboard to act as an interactive screen.
The interaction with said screen will be handled using a pen, finger, or stylus, and in most cases you will need to purchase a specialised device for your interaction. These devices will be self powered, usually taking a few AA batteries.
Upgrades for existing interactive whiteboards are available. For example if you buy a wired whiteboard and later want to upgrade to a wireless model then you will typically be able to purchase an upgrade kit for a reasonable price.
With interactive whiteboards, the possibilities are endless. There are many different brands, and many different types of whiteboards. Start looking now whether you want to change things up in your classroom, or add more functionality to your corporate boardroom. Technology is moving forward and so should you!
